Sicily + Piedmont

October 3 - 10, 2015

8 nights

Western Sicily

Nights 1 - 4

Western Sicily, and its capital, Palermo, are the living expression of over 3,000 years of occupying invaders. The remnant passive chaos of multiple cultures is evident on every street corner: in the art and architecture, in the food, and in the living ruins that surround us.

  • Accommodations at a working Baglio (walled country estate) in Trapani, featuring award-winning wines
  • A private cooking lesson with the Baglio's local chefs
  • A visit to the historic mountaintop village of Erice
  • A morning at the Trapani Salt Flats, in production for over 2,000 years
  • An all-day cooking extravaganza with Duchess Nicoletta Polo Tomasi Lanza at her waterfront home
  • A sumptuous dinner and a tour of the Duchesses' palazzo
  • A guided tour of Palermo, including the infamous food markets (some of the finest in the world)

Le Langhe + Roero

Nights 5 - 9

We'll bookend Italy with a journey north to Piedmont. Nestled in the foothills of the Alps, Piedmont is the seat of the Italian unification movement, a former coveted prize for Austro-Hungarian and French forces, and now a prize destination for its world-class wines, cheeses, chocolates and, of course, truffles.

  • Enjoy a night in Turin, the cultural capital of Italy
  • Dinner at Circolo dei Lettori, a private Literary Club cum fabulous restaurant
  • Accommodations at Castello Guarene (a former feudal lord's estate) turned 5-Star resort and spa
  • A private cooking lesson with Chef Davide Odore
  • Hunt truffles with Jolie, the truffle hunting mutt
  • Taste local wines and food products, meet with the producers
  • We'll tour Machese di Barolo's private cellars and enjoy a private truffle dinner and wine tasting
