Basilicata + Puglia

October 21 - 29, 2017

8 nights

Basilicata

Nights 1 - 4

Who goes to Basilicata? The answer is absolutely no one. The Lucani, the regional name for people from Basilicata, are not self-promoters. The good news is that we'll take care of the promotion for them, because we'll sing the praises of our visit far and wide. The bad news? Basilicata is more for the intrepid than the sophistication-seeking traveler. Daunting? Not at all. It's a matter of traveling taste. Ours resides firmly on the side of getting there before everyone else does.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Accommodations include the Sextanio, a luxe albergo difuso tucked into a hillside in Matera, a UNESCO world heritage site
  • Tastings at two family masserie--wine, fresh sheep's milk ricotta, and so much more
  • All-day cooking class, market tour and dinner
  • Visit the local churches, including the oldest known fresco in Italy
  • Day-trips to Alberobello, home of the beehive-like Trulli, and Martina Franca.
  • A totally do-able (yes, we mean you) hike of the Dolomiti Lucane--the mountains that surround Matera
  • Swim in the turquoise waters beneath the arch of Italy's boot, even in October.
  • Sip a cocktail at Francis Ford Coppola's family hotel (Francis é vero Lucano)
  • Food, local wines, local cheeses to your heart's satisfaction

Puglia

Nights 5 - 8

Ditto Puglia, although the mysteries and charms of Puglia are becoming well known quickly. Puglia's theme: color. In some villages everything is white. The white bee-hive shaped trulli. Ancient white limestone pavement. White sand beaches. And the white city, Ostuni. Add color in the form of vibrant black and green olive groves, jewel-toned red and green grape vineyards and a cerulean blue sea, and there is something for every palate--or pallette.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Home base will be the exclusive Convento di Santa Maria di Constanopoli at the very tip of the stiletto heel of Italy's boot
  • Our private chef will offer breakfast, pasta-making classes and wine and cheese tastings from plant and tree-lined the medieval courtyard
  • We'll explore the coast that launched the Crusades by private boat, stopping for a picnic lunch, a dip in clear azure waters and a poke around the caves and grottos that line Puglia's East coast
  • The beauty of Lecce and Ostuni will captivate us on day trips, roaming the cobbled streets of these fanciful white-walled cities
